Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Found Guilty of Manslaughter
On Wednesday, March 6, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer for the film “Rust,” was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a New Mexico court. This was about the tragic incident on set in 2021 where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins lost her life due to a live round being fired from a prop gun held by actor Alec Baldwin.
Gutierrez Reed, who oversaw firearm safety and storage during filming, was cleared of a charge of tampering with evidence. This charge was filed when authorities claimed she gave a “small bag of cocaine” to another person after being interviewed by police on the day of the October 21, 2021 shooting.
At the age of 26, Gutierrez-Reed could potentially be imprisoned for up to 18 months upon her upcoming sentencing. The judge ruled for her to be detained and kept in custody until the sentencing takes place.
As the jury foreperson announced the verdicts, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed remained stoic, reports NBC News. She removed a necklace and was then led into custody by a deputy. Seated behind her, her mother placed her hands on her head and leaned forward when the judge declared that her daughter would be held in custody until sentencing.
The trial, which lasted almost two weeks, revolved around the shooting that took place on the set of the “Rust” movie in 2021. During the incident, actor Alec Baldwin was holding a prop gun that discharged a real bullet, resulting in the death of the film’s cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins. The director, Joel Souza, was also wounded by the same bullet.
In her closing statements on Wednesday, special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey asserted to the jury that Gutierrez-Reed had exhibited negligence, carelessness, and thoughtlessness.
Baldwin was also accused by the prosecution of being a “prima donna.”
“Alec Baldwin’s conduct and his lack of gun safety in the church that day is something he’s going to have to answer for. … Not with you not today. That’s for another jury for another day.”
Baldwin’s lawyers have yet to respond to a comment request. His trial for criminal charges is set for July.
According to juror Albert Sanchez, neglecting to inspect the weapons played a significant role in his ruling in the Gutierrez-Reed trial.
Before the court adjourned, a date for the sentencing was not established. However, Bowles mentioned that he had availability for the sentencing to take place in April. Additionally, Bowles stated that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed intends to appeal.
According to a statement from the attorneys representing Halyna Hutchins’ parents and sister, the family members have consistently desired for all those responsible for Halyna’s death to face consequences.
