Jamirah Shutes Controversy
The athletic department at Bowling Green reported that a Memphis basketball player was accused of assault by the campus police when they punched a Falcons player in the handshake line after a Women’s NIT game.
Memphis women’s basketball player, Jamirah Shutes, entered a plea of not guilty to the allegations of assault made by the Bowling Green State University Police Department.
The incident occurred after their Super 16 game last week, where Shutes appeared to have delivered a punch to Elissa Brett of Bowling Green.
After Bowling Green’s Women’s NIT victory over Memphis, 73-60, on Thursday, Shutes and Brett encountered each other in the handshake line. Following a brief exchange, Shutes seemed to strike Brett, who then tumbled to the ground.
The personnel from Memphis stepped in quickly and escorted the team’s main player away from the court. There had been two incidents in which Brett and Shutes were involved in physical contact during the game. Brett’s elbow had inadvertently hit Shutes in the first half, and Shutes retaliated in the second half.
The university declared the next day that their police force had been looking into the occurrence prior to lodging charges against Jamirah Shutes.
The Bowling Green State University issued a statement regarding the incident.
“Following Thursday’s unwarranted physical incident after the WNIT home game, the Bowling Green State University Police Department has charged a member of the Memphis Women’s Basketball team with assault.”
“Additionally, BGSU Athletics is conducting its own review. Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well. This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor, and no further comment is available at this time.”
The Memphis State University also issued a statement addressing the incident involving their student.
“The incident that occurred following Thursday’s women’s basketball game was extremely unfortunate and certainly not consistent with, or representative of, our expectations for our programs and student-athletes.”
They further stated,
“Because the incident occurred after the game, jurisdiction falls in the hands of local authorities, and we are cooperating fully with their process.”
Shutes emerged as the highest point scorer in Memphis this season, totaling 15.3 points on average per game. She also earned a spot on the All-AAC second team. In the meantime, Elissa Brett was an All-MAC first-team selection after accumulating 14.7 ppg and 6.0 rpg in her final year.
In 2020-2021, Jamirah Shutes was the top scorer for the team with 15.6 points every match and contributed 4.9 rebounds and 2.2 assists. She achieved a personal best of 31 points against East Carolina and accomplished a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards against Wichita State.
