John Astin, the son of Margaret Linnie Mackenzie and Dr. Allen Varley Astin, was born on March 30, 1930, in Baltimore, Maryland. His father was a physicist who held the post of director of the National Board of Standards, now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology, between 1951 and 1969.
Growing up in Washington, DC, Astin graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1948. He pursued a keen interest in the sciences, inspired by his dad, and this enthusiasm was reinforced when he was admonished by an English teacher in class for misinterpreting Moby Dick. Because of this, he resolutely decided not to study English again. After finishing high school, he was awarded a scholarship to Washington & Jefferson College in West Pennsylvania, where he studied math like his father.
Motivated by Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, Astin and a classmate put on a performance of Noel Coward’s Ways and Means. Subsequently, Astin moved to the mathematics division at Johns Hopkins University. Despite his ambition to finish his coursework, he surprisingly chose the most pivotal decision of his life and enrolled in the Johns Hopkins Play Shop. In 1952, Astin graduated with a diploma in dram from John Hopkins University.
