Childhood & Family
Matty Matheson was raised in Saint John, New Brunswick, by his parents Stephen, an engineer, and Joan, a waitress. They resided in Nova Scotia until Matheson’s eleventh birthday, when they relocated to Fort Erie, Ontario.
Before their move, Matheson had been brought up in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-DayBefore Saints, but the family departed from the church upon leaving Nova Scotia.
Matty’s ancestor, who hailed from Prince Edward Island and had a family history in the region dating back to the 1700s, was both a restaurateur and a former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The family’s ownership and management of The Blue Goose restaurant in DeSable provided Matty with a summer destination.
In 2000, Matheson relocated to Toronto and enrolled in Humber’s cooking program. However, he left the program without completing it to join his friends’ metal band as a roadie for a brief period.
Despite this, Matheson discovered a knack for meat butchering and pursued his culinary aspirations by distributing resumes to various restaurants until he secured a job.
Career
In 2003, Matty Matheson joined Le Sélect Bistro in Toronto and trained under chef Rang Nguyen, learning the art of French cuisine. Three years later, he was recruited by La Palette, and in 2010, he became the executive chef at the newly opened Parts & Labour restaurant.
However, the restaurant shut down in 2019. Matheson’s dynamic and adventurous nature, combined with his culinary skills, earned him a spot on the popular online series Munchies by Vice Media.
Matheson was employed as the host for Viceland’s It’s Suppertime and Dead Set on Life and he also runs his own YouTube channel. He has also made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, during which he taught Jimmy Kimmel how to prepare a “stuffed shell family recipe”.
Matheson became a client of WME Agency (which is owned by Endeavor Group Holdings, Inc.) in April 2021. One year later, he became a member of the team working on FX’s The Bear. In the show, he plays the role of Neil Fak, a handyman, and he is also involved as a producer and culinary advisor.
In 2015, Matheson and Shlomo Buchler joined forces to establish Maker Pizza, a pizzeria that has since expanded to multiple locations across the Greater Toronto Area.
In the summer of 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Matty Matheson launched a temporary restaurant called Matty Matheson’s Meat + Three, featuring American barbecue and traditional meat and three concepts, in Fort Erie. However, the Meat + Three pop-up ended its run in 2022.
In October 2020, Matheson launched a new temporary restaurant in Toronto, an extension of Matty’s Patty’s, which initially operated in Hawaii and briefly in Shibuya, Japan. In December 2020, Matty’s Patty’s established a permanent location in Toronto’s Trinity-Bellwoods neighborhood.
Matheson teamed up with Toronto chefs Kate Chomyshyn and Julio Guajardo in April 2021 to launch Birria Balam, a temporary restaurant in Toronto focusing on the popular Mexican dish birria.
Following its success, the trio decided to establish a permanent establishment, Fonda Balam, in Toronto’s Trinity-Bellwoods and Little Italy areas in October 2021, offering a variety of Mexican dishes including birria. As a result, Birria Balam was closed down.
Matty Matheson and his mentor Rang Nguyen joined forces in January 2022 to launch Ca Phe Rang, a Vietnamese eatery specializing in pho and bánh mì. The restaurant took over the former location of Birria Balam in Toronto’s Chinatown.
Matheson launched Prime Seafood Palace, a combination steakhouse and seafood eatery in Trinity-Bellwoods, Toronto, in April 2022. This was the result of years of planning, dating back to 2016. Later that year in November, Matheson debuted Rizzo’s House of Parm, a classic Italian-American dining spot, at Crystal Beach in Fort Erie, Ontario.
The restaurant was named after his second child and first daughter, Rizzo. These establishments are now part of Matheson’s Our House Hospitality Company.
Wife & Kids
Matty Matheson and Trish Spencer crossed paths when they were both young kids. Matty, a comical punk from their area, caught Trish’s attention. Despite initially not being interested in him, Trish’s older sister persuaded her to give him a chance. They later went to their first prom as a couple and have been together ever since.
In August 2014, the joyful couple exchanged vows and officially tied the knot in Port Dover, surrounded by their family and friends. They are blessed with three kids.
