Who is Thayne Ormsby?
Maria Ormsby’s son, Thayne M. Ormsby, is known to have had a challenging upbringing. When he reached 12 years old, the Department of Health and Human Services removed him from his mother’s care due to instances of physical mistreatment.
He then resided with an uncle until he reached 17 years old. He attended Ellsworth High School but ultimately left during his final year.
Despite his academic success, Ormsby dropped out of high school and had a short temper, often getting angry over insignificant matters. He was only twelve years old when he was removed from his mother’s care and spent a significant amount of time with his uncle.
Due to mistreatment in his family, Ormsby was forced to live with his uncle. On Facebook, he wrote,
“I have but two passions, love and war.”
What did Ormsby do?
Ormsby, who was 20 years old at the time, committed the murders of a 10-year-old boy named Jesse Ryan, as well as two adults, Jeffrey Ryan (55) and Jason Dehahn (30), on June 22, 2010. According to existing records, Ormsby had only recently arrived in the town before the tragic incident occurred.
He resided in the household of Robert and Joy Strout. It is speculated that the Strouts had a strained relationship due to an event involving their daughter, Tamara, and Jeffrey Ryan. Tamara and Ryan were rumored to have had a romantic involvement resulting in the birth of a child.
Thayne Ormsby stated his intention was solely to target Jeffrey Ryan, whom he suspected to be involved in drug trafficking. However, there is no proof to support this assertion.
Despite this, upon arriving at the residence, Ormsby found Ryan in the company of his son Jesse, aged ten, and a neighbor named Jason. Instead of aborting his plan, Ormsby proceeded to stab all three individuals.
He stabbed them and then burned Jason Dehahn’s truck to conceal the act. Despite visiting Ryan’s house multiple times, Jason Hahn’s sibling was unable to locate his missing brother. After noticing blood, he contacted his father. Jason’s charred truck wasn’t found until three days later.
During these events, Thayne Ormsby fled to New Hampshire and was apprehended on July 2, 2010. After committing the murders, he returned to the Strout residence and convinced Robert Sprout to aid in his escape. Together, they set fire to Jason’s truck, and Robert then transported him to his son’s residence in New Hampshire.
It is puzzling why he backed Thayne Ormsby. Robert disclosed that he felt compelled by the 20-year-old Ormsby, who had allegedly made threats to harm Strout’s loved ones if he did not offer assistance. However, after being captured, Ormsby refuted these claims.
Thayne Ormsby’s Arrest
Using DNA evidence collected from the crime scene, the authorities were able to locate and apprehend Ormsby. His fingerprints were found on a beer bottle, further connecting him to the crime.
After being taken into custody, Ormsby reportedly admitted to struggling with alcoholism and becoming violent when under the influence. During an extensive interview on the day of his arrest, Ormsby confessed to committing the crime.
After being sentenced, Thayne Ormsby filed an appeal claiming that the statements he made during a 2010 police interview should not be used as evidence.
Despite this, his request was denied as he had previously given up his Miranda rights. The court determined that his confession was made willingly and its inclusion in the trial did not violate his Fifth Amendment rights.
Is Thayne Ormsby still alive?
Ormsby was convicted in 2012 for committing three murders and one act of arson. The arson involved a car that was stolen from the location of the murders and was deliberately set ablaze in an attempt to hide any incriminating evidence.
He was given three life sentences and an additional 15 years for setting fire to a building. He is currently in custody at Maine State Prison in Warren, Knox County. He is still alive and serving his sentence, which is likely to be until his death as he was given life without the possibility of parole.
