Zyahna Bryant is a community organiser and student activist who has worked on a number of social justice projects, with a focus on fat and racial justice. She started the Black Student Union in her high school and participated actively in the Charlottesville Youth Council, demonstrating her lengthy history of engagement.
Who Is Zyahna Bryant?
Zyahna Bryant was born on 6th July, 2000 in Charlottesville, Virginia. She was born to Zyahna Bryant Sr. and Sabrina Bryant. Zariyah and Zion are her two younger siblings. Bryant founded the Black Student Union (BSU) at Charlottesville High School in order to give Black students a place to gather and form communities. She completed her undergraduate studies in African American and African Studies at the University of Virginia, where she was awarded a bachelor of arts degree.
She took the lead in organising the petition that resulted in the Confederate statues being taken down from Charlottesville’s parks. Since the age of twelve, she has been an activist. She was included in Teen Vogue’s “21 under 21” list in the summer of 2020.
Additionally, she spearheaded an internet hate campaign against Morgan Bettinger, a fellow white UVA student, alleging that she threatened demonstrators in July 2020 at the Charlottesville George Floyd rallies by stating that they would “make good speed bumps.” Bryant later acknowledged that she might have “misheard” Bettinger. She even wrote and filed a complaint with the University Judiciary Committee (UJC), which resulted in Bettinger’s expulsion in abeyance.
Soap Brand, Dove And Zyahna Bryant
Dove soap is receiving a lot of negative feedback on social media since it partnered with controversial Black Lives Matter (BLM) activist Zyahna Bryant. In August, Zyahna Bryant announced to her Instagram fans that she was the new Dove ambassador. Bryant went on to say that she wants to promote the notion of fat liberation.
She said, “Fat liberation is something we should all be talking about! That’s why I am partnering with Dove, to support the work of [the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance], @flareforjustice in the Campaign for Size Freedom.”
In the video, she went on to state that, in her opinion, the perspectives and experiences of the most marginalised individuals and communities should always come first. “So when I think about what fat liberation looks like to me, I think about centering the voices of those who live in and who manoeuvre through spaces and institutions in a fat body.”
Her supporters began to show their support for her as soon as she posted the announcement on Instagram.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, the vast majority of internet people, however, began stating that Dove should be boycotted immediately because the cosmetics business partnered with a lady who destroyed a student’s life.
Social Media Users Decided To Boycott Dove
Internet users quickly began posting disparaging remarks after learning about the beauty brand’s partnership with activist Zyahna Bryant.
Numerous people on social media said that Bryant is the same person who, after falsely accusing a white student of making racist remarks, destroyed her life. In response to the contentious news, other individuals on the internet also posted videos of themselves tossing Dove soap bars into the trash bin.
Zyahna Bryant GoFundMe
Erica Chapman, Zyahna’s cousin, created a GoFundMe page to help gather money for her protection. According to the page, Zyahna has been getting hate mail and threats for a long time.
Zyahna has been getting threats and hate letters for years, but lately, things have gotten worse. We want to make sure that Zyahna, who is a graduate student right now, can carry on with all of the work she is doing in the community and in the classroom. We do not want that to be diminished by these acts of racism.
Please make sure Zyahna is safe and protected as she carries on with her vital work of supporting and upholding marginalised individuals and communities in order to enable her friends and family to support her.
