Betsy Brandt was born in Bay City, Michigan, and is of German heritage. In 1991, she completed her studies at Bay City Western High School, located in Auburn, Michigan.
From a young age, she had a passion for theater, but unlike most of her classmates, she was drawn to directing stage musicals rather than being the lead performer. However, after landing the lead role in Exit the Body during her time in high school, she redirected her attention towards acting.
In 1996, Brandt earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in acting from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She then pursued her Master of Fine Arts at Harvard University’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training and also studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

In 2012, she secured the role of Sandy in Parenthood. Following this, Brandt was chosen to play Annie Henry on The Michael J. Fox Show, which debuted in September 2013.
