Whoopi Goldberg is the latest “woke” celebrity to leave Twitter since Elon Musk took it over.
Goldberg, who is 66 years old, closed her account after she said on The View that the social media site was a “mess.”
A few hours earlier, supermodel Gigi Hadid had deleted her account and said that Twitter had become “more of a cesspool of hate and bigotry.”
They join a long list of well-known, left-leaning people who have said they will leave Twitter after Elon Musk bought it last month and called himself “Chief Twit.”
But some people who have said they are leaving still have active accounts on the site. These people include Grammy winner Sara Bareilles and Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.
Conservative commentators have been happy about Musk’s takeover since the Tesla CEO said he would keep free speech on the platform. This was in response to claims that right-wing voices had been shut down or silenced in the past.
Goldberg said on The View when she talked about her decision, ‘I’m going to get out, and if it settles down and I feel more comfortable, maybe I’ll come back.
‘But as of tonight, I’m done with Twitter.’
She said that since Musk took over, Twitter had become “a mess,” and she brought up the fact that Kathy Griffin was banned for pretending to be the Twitter boss.
Goldberg added: ‘I’m getting off. I’m getting off today because I just feel like, you know, it’s so messy.’
She also said, “Some speech is not OK free speech,” which seems to be a reference to Musk’s promise to protect conservative voices on the platform.
Sunny Hostin, the other host, said: ‘You’ve got this Elon Musk turning it into something that it was never intended to be. It’s going to be the public square.
‘Well I don’t want to be part of that public square, but I also don’t want to miss the valuable information that can be put on there.’
Hadid posted on Instagram on Saturday that she was leaving: ‘For a long time, but especially with its new leadership, it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry, and its [sic] not a place I want to be apart of.’
Three days after the Musk era started, on October 30, Bareilles wrote: ‘Welp. It’s been fun Twitter. I’m out. See you on other platforms, peeps. Sorry, this one’s just not for me.’
Rhimes said on October 29 that she was leaving, but her account was still up and running on Monday afternoon.
‘Not hanging around for whatever Elon has planned. Bye,’ she said.
Toni Braxton, who has won seven Grammys, is still on the site, even though she has left.
After Musk bought the company, she wrote: ‘I’m shocked and appalled at some of the “free speech” I’ve seen on this platform since its acquisition.
‘Hate speech under the veil of “free speech” is unacceptable; therefore I am choosing to stay off Twitter as it is no longer a safe space for myself, my sons and other POC.’
