The DCEU’s Ghost Haunts Aquaman 2
Let’s cut to the chase: the DCEU is dead. Kaput. Over. And yet, here we are, counting down to the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The film, starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard, is a relic of a bygone era, a universe that has been officially shelved.
“Aquaman 2 lives in an empty world,” a source close to the project lamented. “The store is already closed. Everyone has gone home. Now we’re just peering through a window at empty shelves.”
The DCEU’s demise has left Aquaman 2 in a precarious position. It’s a film without a universe, a story without a larger narrative. It’s like a ship sailing without a compass, and fans are left wondering: does this movie even matter?
Momoa’s Future in the DC Universe
Jason Momoa isn’t sweating it. The actor, who brought Arthur Curry to life, is already eyeing his next DC role. Rumor has it that Momoa is slated to play Lobo, the cigar-chomping, trash-talking antihero.
“Lobo is an alien psychopath created by DC to parody Marvel’s Wolverine,” explains a comic book insider. “He’s a perfect fit for Momoa.”
The whispers suggest that Momoa’s Lobo could make his debut in Superman: Legacy, the upcoming DCU reboot featuring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.
“James Gunn is no fool,” says a source close to the project. “Just because the DCEU didn’t work doesn’t mean he can’t work with those actors.”
The Elon Musk Factor
But it’s not all smooth sailing for Aquaman 2. The film has been embroiled in controversy, thanks in part to Elon Musk. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO reportedly intervened when Amber Heard was nearly dropped from the film.
“Musk had one of his litigators send a ‘scorched-earth letter to Warner Bros. threatening to burn the house down’ if the actress wasn’t brought back for a sequel,” reports Variety.
This isn’t the first time Musk has thrown his weight around. The billionaire recently acquired Twitter, leading many to speculate that Warner Bros. caved to his demands to avoid a similar fate.
The Amber Heard Saga
Amber Heard, who reprises her role as Mera, has been a lightning rod for controversy. She’s made several allegations, including claims that Momoa was drunk on set and dressed like Johnny Depp to upset her. Filmmakers have vehemently denied these accusations, stating that Momoa has always had a “bohemian style” similar to Depp’s.
The Audience’s Verdict
So, where does all this leave Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom? In a word: floundering. The film is plagued by controversies, a disinterested audience, and a universe that has moved on.
“What we have is a true example of stream shrugging,” says a film critic. “People aren’t interested enough to go see the movie, and they know it will be on Max sooner than later, so what’s the point?”
In a summer filled with big names and well-known properties, Aquaman 2 seems to be sinking before it even sets sail. Whether it can defy the odds and make a splash remains to be seen. But for now, it’s a film adrift, searching for a lifeline in a sea of indifference.
