When Gods Walked Among Us: Earth’s Lost Chapter on Thor
Remember how we all freaked out when Odin casually mentioned in “Thor: Ragnarok” that they used to be worshipped as gods on Earth? Well, hold onto your enchanted hammers, because Loki Season 2 just went full-on Sherlock Holmes at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, adding layers to Thor’s mysterious past that we didn’t even know were missing.
“In Loki season 2 episode 3, the God of Mischief and close ally Mobius head to the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago on Earth, following the temporal footprints of the latest Kang variant Victor Timely, as well as Renslayer and Miss Minutes. During that detective-style hunt for the TVA rogues, Loki and Mobius come across statues of Odin, Thor, and missing brother Balder the Brave, confirming that Earth worshipped the Asgardians as Gods.”
That’s right; not only did Loki and Mobius discover Earth’s forgotten devotion to Asgardians, but they also stumbled upon the reveal that Balder the Brave exists in the MCU.
Wait, Thor Was Here Before New Mexico?
We’ve always known that Earth’s myths were inspired by Asgardians, but Thor himself was absent from those ancient pages. Why? Because Marvel wanted us to think that Thor’s first arrival on Earth was in 2011, in the New Mexico desert where he bumped into Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster. However, Loki Season 2 just retconned all that.
“Crucially, the statues confirm that Thor visited Earth as an adult, long after Odin battled the Frost Giants on Earth.”
So, what does this mean? It means that Thor has some ‘splainin to do, especially considering a conflicting statement he made back in “The Avengers.”
That Line in The Avengers Just Became a Plot Hole
Sure, we hung onto every word Thor said about Earth in “The Avengers,” but now it turns out that a specific line may not make any sense at all.
“In the MCU’s first crossover event, Thor talks to SHIELD’s Agent Phil Coulson about the hypocrisy of Asgardians, who believe themselves to be superior, but turn up on Earth warring like ‘bilge snipe.'”
According to that dialogue, Thor’s first trip to Earth was supposedly in 2011, during the events of his solo film. Loki Season 2 now forces us to question the integrity of that claim.
“But Loki season 2 confirms that Thor’s first trip to Earth cannot have been in 2011, making the line a strange anomaly.”
So What’s Next for the God of Thunder?
Thor’s timeline has always been a subject of curiosity for fans. While we had some clarity about his age in “Avengers: Infinity War,” and we knew he was a rowdy youth, this new Loki revelation turns everything upside down.
“Loki season 2 has confirmed one major detail (as well as confirming the existence of his Marvel Comics brother Balder the Brave).”
Could this mean that Thor’s adventures on Earth are more entangled in human history than we thought? And how does this change the dynamics of what we know about Asgard’s influence on Earth? Only future episodes of Loki and the next Thor film can answer these burning questions.
