The recent teasers for the upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka have revealed some interesting details. One such details include Sabine Wren, played by Natasha Liu Bordizzo using a lightsaber while facing Shin Hati, played by Ivanna Sakhno. Seeing as Sabine is a Mandalorian and not a Jedi, her using a lightsaber seems quite unusual, doesn’t it?
Ahsoka: Why Does Sabine Wren Have A Lightsaber?
Disney+’s all-new Star Wars series starring Natasha Liu Bordizzo released a teaser for the upcoming show which is set to release in August 2023. The latest teaser showed Sabine’s character carrying a lightsaber to duel against Shin Hati. However, it has certainly raised a lot of eyebrows since Sabine is not a Jedi and is not supposed to have a lightsaber.
The series is a direct sequel to the animated series Star Wars Rebels. And the series finale showed how Sabine uses Ezra’s lightsaber to escape from Grand Admiral Thrawn. Sabine successfully escaped Thrawn and is left holding onto Ezra’s lightsaber as both Thrawn and Ezra disappear into the galaxy. Since Sabine is left with the lightsaber, the lightsaber we see Sabine wielding in the Ahsoka teaser is certainly Ezra’s.
Ahsoka’s Sabine Knows How To Handle A Lightsaber
If you’re a die-hard Star Wars: Rebel fan, you must know that Sabine Wren is a highly-experienced fighter. Since childhood, she was trained in the Mandalorian art of war and is well-versed with deadly weapons. We’ve seen her play around with explosives throughout the series and the ancient Mandalorian weapon, known as the Darksaber. After she acquired the Darksaber, Sabine was trained to master the lightsaber by Ezra and the former Jedi Knight Kanan Jarrus. Sabine effortlessly mastered the Jedi’s skill with a Mandalorian flair.
What’s more interesting is that Natasha Liu Bardozzi, who plays Sabine Wren in the live-action Ahsoka series, is a trained fighter herself. In an interview with Vogue, she revealed that she’d been learning combat skills since she was about 9 years old. The actress was being interviewed after her successful silver-screen debut for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny.
“When I was about 9 or 10, my parents told me I’d either have to start martial arts or dance. I was always a tomboy, so of course I was like, ‘Martial arts, definitely. I’m not a ballerina—come on!’ And I stuck with it. Through my teenage years it really became an outlet for me to let out any frustration. I think it transfers into your life as well: You just become more disciplined and more focused.”
Well, we certainly can’t wait to see Natasha’s Sabine show off her martial arts skills on screen. Ahsoka will begin streaming on Disney+ on August 23, 2023.
