The first Indiana Jones series that is not directed by Steven Spielberg is set to hit theatres at the end of June. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny starring Harrison Ford has a new director, James Mangold. However, Spielberg does remain involved in the project as a producer.
Steven Spielberg Decided To Not Direct ‘Indy 5’
Spielberg decided to hand over the directing hat to James Mangold for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Mangold is well-known and highly praised for his directorial projects such as Logan and Ford v Ferrari. Although, Spielberg and George Lucas were serving as executive producers on the movie. It was pretty evident that Spielberg’s decision to take a step back from the Indy 5 direction was not taken well by fans. The award-winning director has been a part of the franchise for nearly four decades.
Why Did Steven Spielberg Change His Mind?
Despite having reached an agreement with Paramount Pictures, along with George Lucas, to make five Indiana Jones movies, there was something that caused Steven Spielberg to change his decision. The said deal with Paramount Pictures was agreed upon in 1979. After the last release of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in 2008, Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney Film. Even after the takeover, Steven Spielberg expressed his intentions to direct the next franchise. However, it seemed like creative differences were what caused Steven Spielberg to step away from directing The Dial of Destiny.
George Lucas wanted the concept of the film to have the same style of direction as the original trilogy. On the other hand, Steven Spielberg wanted to experiment with the film’s direction along the lines of King of the Crystal Skull. Despite multiple discussions and brainstorming sessions, the two could not share the vision of the movie’s direction.
In March 2016, it was announced that Indiana Jones 5 was going to hit the theatres soon and Steven Spielberg will be directing the same with Harrison Ford reprising his role. The project was delayed several times as it was announced that the fifth instalment of Indiana Jones will be released in 2019. Meanwhile, Spielberg wasted no time in getting busy with his other projects.
Finally, the discussion came to a conclusion when Variety revealed that James Mangold is set to replace Steven Spielberg as the director of Dial of Destiny. It was reported in the article by a source close to the Schindler’s List director that the decision was taken by Steven Spielberg himself. It said that the decision was made “in a desire to pass along Indy’s whip to a new generation to bring their perspective to the story.”
