Naruto is suffering from an unknown chakra disease. Is this a setup for his death at the end of Boruto? Spoilers for Boruto ahead.
Naruto is considered one of the most influential anime of all time. It is part of the “Big Three” along with Naruto are One Piece and Bleach. Seeing the massive success of the manga, it was adapted into anime and a video game. The mangaka of Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, is also responsible for the sequel manga called Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. It follows the adventures of Boruto Uzumaki, the son of Naruto Uzumaki, and his ninja team.
The series premiered as an anime on 5 April 2017 on TV Tokyo. The series has a total of 286 episodes. The most recent one aired on Sunday, 5th February.
Is the chakra sickness taking its toll on Naruto Uzumaki?
In the recent arc of Boruto anime, we can see Sasuke and Sakura in search of the Ultra Particles. Sasuke wants to help his best friend Naruto get cured of the Chakra illness. The chakra virus is a deadly virus that impacts a person’s ability to mold Chakra. Many Shinobis are afraid of this infection.
The illness was first introduced in the Naruto Novel Sasuke Retsuden: The Uchiha Descendants and the Heavenly Stardust. First released in 2019 under the Jump J Books imprint. The story involves Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. The lovers go on a quest to find answers to Naruto’s mysterious chakra illness. This is the deadliest foe the protagonist has faced so far. A battle against himself.
On their journey, they discover that the illness also affected the first Sage of the Six Paths, also known as Jinchuriki Rikudo Sennin, Hagoromo Otsutsuki. Sasuke and Sakura also discovered that the sage found a cure for the disease. He had split a looming meteorite in half and exposed himself to the particles coming from it. The particles are now called Ultra Particles.
It is clear from Boruto episode 285 that the couple was able to figure out how to acquire the said Ultra Particle. However, they run into trouble when Zansul resurrects a lot of dragon beasts at once. Sakura also loses the acquired Ultra Particles to Jiji after he betrays her. This raises a big question: will they get it back and save their best friend? The answer lies in the next episode.
Boruto episode 286 – Sasuke’s Story: The Ring
After fighting off the flying beasts, Sasuke and his beast friend Meno return to the Tartar Observatory. He tries to find Sakura by trying to detect her Chakra but cannot find her amid the rubble she is buried in. Sasuke manages to find her with the help of the chakra ring he gave her. He heals her of her poison wound and they both head off to help the prisoners escape and find Zansul.
In the process, they receive a message from Kakashi that the new king of Nanara has arrested the Prime Minister. Zansul still continues his attacks while conjuring more beasts. Zansul instructs a beast to fly him in the air to see Sasukes attacks. Later he admits defeat and asks the beast to drop him on the ground. He does not survive the drop as he is a regular human. Sakura faces Jiji while helping the prisoners escape and traps him under deceit.
Before handing him over to the people of Redaku, Sasuke asks him the reason for his deceit. Jiji tells his life story and they let him go under sympathy. In the later scene, we see that Naruto is alive and well. Sasuke and Sakura managed to heal him of his mysterious Chakra illness with the help of the Ultra Particles.

This episode concludes the Sasuke Retsuden arc, and the story will progress with the Code arc. Our hero Naruto has survived the biggest challenge yet. An attack on his chakra, the very thing that gave him strength and helped him become the very best Hoekage. Seems like when it comes to taking risks, the Boruto series isn’t holding back. Maybe in the future, we might see the major characters getting into more and more grave danger and possibly death.
