What is a stimulus check?
The U.S. government gives out paper checks or makes direct payments to tax-paying citizens. The government gives out these payments during times of economic crisis to stimulate the economy.
The U.S. Government has been regulating everything, from social security payments to Tax rebates. This is due to the inflation that has affected everybody. The pandemic had caused many businesses to shut down and caused losses to many. To help the citizens, the U.S. government gave out 3 stimulus checks between 2020 and 2021. The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) Issued 3 checks as follows:
- April 2020 – $1,200
- December 2020- $600
- March 2021 – $1,400
Apart from the mentioned, each state also individually issued checks of various amounts to its citizens in 2022. This helped the citizens face some inflation. The Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) In New York sent checks of up to $270 to eligible New Yorkers. President Joe Biden has not mentioned the government’s wish to issue a fourth stimulus check. The Congress government has not approved any laws that would indicate the same.
The necessity of the fourth stimulus check in 2023
The citizens of America are hopeful for a fourth check. The government has not mentioned anything regarding this so far. The struggling economy has put many low-wage workers at risk. A restaurant owner named Stephanie Bonin started a change org petition demanding a Stimulus check. She said
Our country is still deeply struggling. The recovery hasn’t reached many Americans – the true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated at over 20% and many people face large debts from last year for things like utilities, rent and child care. These are all reasons that checks need to be targeted to people who are still struggling and that Congress needs to learn from this past year. It took nine months for Congress to send a second stimulus check, and just moments to spend it. Moving forward Congress needs to make recurring checks automatic if certain triggers are met. No more waiting around for our government to send the help we need
The petition has about 30,50,195 signatures and looks forward to signatures of 45,00,000.
