The Witcher Season 3 left fans on the edge of their seats with a cliffhanger. Geralt and Yennefer finally uncovered the true identity of the rogue mage conspiring against Ciri.
However, the upcoming episodes promise even more thrilling developments. One of the exciting details to look forward to is Yennefer’s rise to power and her involvement with the Lodge of Sorceresses.
A Shift in Leadership
In the books, the Lodge of Sorceresses is founded and led by Philippa Eilhart. However, the show takes a different approach.
By the end of Season 3, it will be Yennefer who gathers the survivors of the Thanedd incident and declares that it is up to them to shape the future of the Continent.
We caught a glimpse of this pivotal moment in a still image from the first meeting of the “proto-Lodge,” with Yennefer at the center.
The founding members of this new iteration of the Lodge include Yennefer, Triss Merigold, Sabrina Glevissig, Keira Metz, and Margarita Laux-Antille, but Philippa Eilhart is notably absent.
While Philippa is preoccupied with political machinations in Redania, Yennefer takes charge of gathering and leading the sorceresses. This shift sets the stage for Yennefer’s role in Season 3.
It is important to note that Yennefer’s leadership of the Lodge does not necessarily mean Philippa will never be a part of it or assume leadership in subsequent seasons.
The dynamic between Yennefer and Philippa may undergo changes, with Yennefer potentially leaving the Lodge or facing opposition within the group. The future trajectory of Yennefer’s character remains uncertain.
This narrative change aligns the journeys of the show’s main trio—Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer—in Season 4. Each character will have their own respective circles: Geralt with the Hansa, Ciri with the Rats, and Yennefer with the Lodge.
Reasons for the Change
Fans of Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels may note that Yennefer’s role after the Thanedd Coup is less prominent compared to her prominence in the show.
In the books, Yennefer spends a significant portion of the remaining novels as a captive or on the run from the Lodge.
The decision to elevate Yennefer’s character in the show and make her an equal lead alongside Geralt and Ciri has been well-received by fans. It would be a disservice to her character to diminish her importance after Season 3, especially considering Geralt’s upcoming recasting.
Additionally, Season 2 already explored Yennefer’s captivity and escape, making it repetitive to revisit that storyline.
Therefore, it is not surprising that Yennefer’s arc will deviate from the novels after Season 3. The exact direction of her character will be revealed in Seasons 4 and 5.
What’s Next in The Witcher Season 3?
Fans eagerly await Volume 2 of The Witcher Season 3, set to release on July 27. The unfolding of Yennefer’s political journey and her role in the Lodge of Sorceresses promises to be an enthralling aspect of the upcoming episodes.
