Meet Sophia Celentano, a savvy jet-setter who commutes by plane every single week to get to her internship in New Jersey. Surprisingly, her unconventional approach is actually cheaper than renting a place in the area.
Woman commutes to new jersey by plane every week to get to her internship because it’s cheaper than buying or renting an apartment.
In a viral TikTok video, Sophia shared her commuting strategy with her thousands of followers. The video caught the attention of many due to her alternative method of getting to work.
Sophia’s decision to fly to her internship instead of renting a place allows her to bypass the high cost of living on the east coast.
Speaking to Business Insider, Sophia explained her rationale behind this unusual commute. She mentioned that when she received the internship offer from Ogilvy, she realized that she only needed to be physically present at the office for one mandatory day per week.
With that in mind, she saw no reason to spend a significant amount of money on rent for the remaining days. Thus, the idea of super-commuting was born.
So, how does Sophia manage her weekly commute? She shared her morning routine, highlighting the dedication and organization required for such an endeavor. Initially, she would wake up at 3 am, but over time, she adjusted to waking up around 3:30 am or 3:45 am.
After getting ready, she puts on her business casual outfit, prepares her bag, and packs a lunch. She even brings comfortable clothes for the flight and grabs a coffee to go.
Departing her house at around 4:30 am, Sophia arrives at the airport by 5 am. Thanks to her TSA PreCheck, she breezes through airport security in just five to ten minutes. By 5:15 am, she’s already at her gate, ready for boarding.
Once the flight lands, Sophia calls an Uber immediately and reaches the office in New Jersey around 8:30 or 8:45 am, right on time to start her 9-5 workday.
After a full day of work, Sophia hops back on a plane to return home. She lands around 11 pm in either Charleston, where her parents live, or Richmond, Virginia, where her boyfriend resides.
As she works remotely the following day, she can enjoy a bit more sleep, not needing to wake up until around 8 am to start her work.
Sophia admits that her weekly commute can be tiresome but believes it’s entirely worth it. By choosing this unconventional approach, she saves a significant amount of money. Her flights cost approximately $100 round trip, and she spends about $100 on Ubers between the office and the airport.
Compared to the thousands of dollars she would spend on rent in New York City or New Jersey, her commute is a bargain.
While super-commuting may not be suitable for everyone, Sophia has grown accustomed to the hustle and adventure it offers. However, she acknowledges that it can be challenging at times, especially when delays occur.
Sophia emphasizes that her decision to commute was primarily driven by the temporary nature of her internship, which lasts for only ten weeks. For a full-time position, she might not consider super-commuting in the long run.
Nevertheless, Sophia’s story speaks to the shifting priorities of people in the wake of the pandemic. The hybrid work model allows for greater flexibility, and physical proximity to the office is no longer a necessity.
Sophia believes that a successful career is achievable even when living far away from work. Her experience highlights the growing emphasis on work-life balance and the possibilities offered by remote work arrangements.
Sophia Celentano’s unique commuting strategy has gained attention for its cost-saving benefits and work-life balance advantages. As the world embraces hybrid work models and remote opportunities, individuals like Sophia are finding new ways to thrive professionally while prioritizing their personal lives.
