We can look back at the past and wonder how some of the things we had to put up with were ever considered acceptable.
Nowadays, more people are aware of the harm that constant scrutiny of someone’s body can do to their mental health. It wasn’t long ago that we couldn’t turn on our TVs without seeing someone exaggerate the size of celebrities and judge them harshly for any deviation from an ideal beauty standard.
Some of us will find it hard to feel sorry for people who are richer than us, but that messaging also affects how we perceive each other and ourselves.
The issue of being shamed for their bodies is still serious enough that people have been thrown off of planes and out of the gym because of it.
One woman’s story reminds us that this isn’t something we have to put up with.
In a video uploaded to TikTok on April 18, a woman named Dalina began her story by saying, “I need to know if I’m being dramatic.”
She said that things started normally with a tattoo artist approaching her while they were in the gym and offering his services since she clearly has an affinity for them.
After he gave her his card, she was impressed by his work and decided to get a tattoo on her stomach.
He told her to take off her shirt after she came to his shop.
At this point, only her nipples were covered and the artist started making comments about her body.
In spite of the fact that her doubts were raised when he began discussing how unbalanced he viewed her and particularly when he alluded to her bosoms in a disparaging manner, there was one final remark that filled in as the final straw for Dalina.
In her words, “I turn around and he goes, ‘Oh I get why I see you at the gym all the time. You’ve got back rolls.'”
As she put it, “I got up and I paid him and I left.”
The commenters agreed that she was not being dramatic and that the artist’s comments made her uncomfortable.
She replied in a follow-up video that she thought it was the best way to prevent the situation from becoming unsafe because of their differences in size.
Since the artist’s behavior appalled several other tattoo artists as well, Dalina revealed in yet another follow-up that a couple of them had offered to finish the job.
As she mentioned, she is currently working with an artist named Paula who has previously begun to regroup and reached her not long after Dalina posted her video.
As Dalina put it, “I’m excited to see how it finishes, but overall I’m happy I stopped him when I did so I could get it completed by someone who respected me.”
