In the world championship cycling event for women that was held on Sunday, identified as a transgender woman, a biological male racked the title.
Rachel McKinnon, who was representing Canada in the women’s sprint 35-39 age bracket at the 2018 UCI Masters Track Cycling World Championships held at Los Angeles, bested American cyclist Jennifer Wagner and Carolien Van Herrikhuyzen of the Netherlands to write her name on the medal.
McKinnon is a professor at the College of Charleston.
Accepting biological males who identify as transgender women to compete in women’s athletic events has drawn a lot of controversy towards the sport. Sports critics have expressed concerns over how this puts the other female competitors in a ‘disadvantage category.’
Controversy further sparked as McKinnon was quoted in USA Today arguing against requiring biological males to suppress testosterone as a requirement for competing against women.
