John Cena rose to prominence through WWE, i.e., World Wrestling Entertainment. Now, he’s a Hollywood superstar who is best known for playing Peacemaker in James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad.” Exploring the character further, Gunn kicked in a spin-off and created ‘Peacemaker’ for HBO Max. He is also seen in movies like ‘Bumblebee’, ‘The Marine’, ‘F9′, 12 Rounds’, and more. With big roles come big stacks. However, some of it goes to WWE. John Cena has explains that a percentage of whatever he earns goes to Vince McMahon, aka WWE.
John Cena opened up about the percentage sharing on The Howard Stern Show. He says, “Howard, before this I was a kid in a small Massachusetts town mowing lawns for a golf course. I don’t mind kicking a percentage of my earnings to the person who gave me a chance and an opportunity. If anything that’s a sign of respect, I owe that guy a lot.” Cena also explains that Vince McMahon owns his name through intellectual property.
WWE owns a percentage of whatever John Cena earns
Tom Colohue, an investigative journalist, once dove into the concept of owning names. He says, “To cite an example, the WWE owns the name John Cena and that is John Cena’s actual name. That means whenever John Cena is filming, whenever he is credited in a film, the WWE gets a pay cut. They get a cut of the profits. There are some people currently working for the WWE whose names are owned by the WWE. I don’t know who, I don’t have a distinctive list. I haven’t read everybody’s contract but those people know who they are.”
In today’s time, John Cena’s net worth is $60 million and it’s safe to say that he is doing extremely well in his career. For him, giving away a portion of his earnings to the people who made him who he is today is okay. Cena will next be seen alongside Henry Cavil, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, and more, in the spy thriller Argylle.
